Following the amount of airtime devoted to scandals from Facebook / Cambridge Analytica to Google+, it may come as no surprise that social media platforms pose the biggest danger when it comes to data breaches.
Gemalto’s latest Breach Level Index, which keeps a record of the world’s public data breaches points the finger firmly at social platforms, which accounted for over 56% of the 4.5bn pieces of information that were put into jeopardy through the first six months of this year.
According to Gemalto, 945 data breaches accounted for this number from January to the end of June, including the Facebook Cambridge Analytica breach which saw 87 million Facebook users’ data taken in 2014 to created targeted with political messages on the social network in the run-up to the presidential elections.
It’s been barely two weeks since Facebook was last in the spotlight for yet another security fiasco, with the giant admitting to 50 million users’ details being compromised by a bug the platforms ‘View As’ feature.
Early this week, Google+ announced a shutdown following a glitch in its platform through which external developers were able to access the data of over 500,000 users.
Jason Hart, VP and CTO for data protection at Gemalto said:
“Obviously, this year social media has been the top industry and threat vector for the compromise of personal data, a trend we can expect to continue, with more and more sectors leveraging these platforms to reach key audiences, especially political teams gearing up for major elections.”
