Less than half of the world's marketing and communications professionals feel fulfilled by their jobs, according to LinkedIn.

According to the survey, just 45% of those surveyed are 'very' or 'completely' fulfilled by their current role. However, that figure does place it 11th on a list of most fulfilling jobs.

Nearly three quarters (71%) said they would take a pay cut to be happier at work and 73% would take a pay cut for better work life balance. This comes despite 53% highlighting salary as the most important factor in feeling fulfilled, along with their relationships with colleagues. A positive work-life balance was chosen by just 31% of those questioned.

But worryingly, nearly a quarter (23%) admitted they wouldn't recommend their employer to another person. The average marketing professional plans to stay with their employer for 5.3 years, below the job average of 6.7 years. And 80% said they would be open to a move, if they were approached by a recruiter.

LinkedIn director of UK and global communications, Danielle Restivo, said: “Having a fulfilling job can have a big impact on overall happiness and success at work, but it appears that career satisfaction is eluding thousands of Brits.

“It’s our mission to help professionals across the globe to find jobs that they love.

“Three quarters of UK workers would be open to a new job if approached by a recruiter, but we’d advise anyone who’s unsatisfied in their career to take action themselves. To help, we’ve introduced a new feature - Open Candidates - that lets LinkedIn members quietly signal to recruiters that they are open to new opportunities, without it being visible on their LinkedIn profile.”

Top tips for job seekers

To help unfulfilled professionals find jobs that they love, here are LinkedIn's top four tips:

Know what you want: Start by working out what you need to be happier at work. Make a checklist that puts your priorities in order of importance, and work out which you’d be prepared to compromise on, versus any deal-breakers.

Do your research: A company’s website and their Company Page on LinkedIn are great places to start to find out if their values match your own, but it’s also invaluable to look at what their current employees say about them online, to make sure that they practice what they preach.

Signal your interest: Let the opportunities come to you by showing that you are interested in hearing from potential employers. LinkedIn’s new ‘Open Candidates’ feature lets you quietly signal to recruiters that they are interested in new opportunities.

Use your network: Even if they don’t have open roles, many employers will be up for meeting great candidates. Rather than reaching out cold, use your LinkedIn network to see if you have any connections in common who could make an intro.
