Instagram is rapidly becoming an increasingly attractive advertising platform for brands, with the social media company hitting 500,000 active monthly advertisers for the first time.

Instagram said it has doubled its advertiser base in the past six months alone, and more than 1.5 million users converted to business profiles since Instagram launched its Business Tools.

The news comes after Instagram earlier this year revealed it reached 500 million active monthly users.

In a blog post announcing the landmark, Instagram said its growing and diverse community is becoming "where advertisers build their brand and turn passions into purchase", with the top five advertising verticals on Instagram being consumer packaged goods, e-commerce, retail, entertainment and technology.

"People come to Instagram in a mind-set of discovery, and since we opened up our advertising platform last September, there have been 1 billion actions related to ads on Instagram."

Amy Cole, head of brand development EMEA, at Instagram, said: “Just one year ago we opened up our advertising platform, and it’s incredible to think there are now half a million advertisers using Instagram to connect with our diverse global community and to drive meaningful business results. Over the last year we’ve introduced a host of creative tools and ad formats, making Instagram a powerful place for brands to drive awareness and turn inspiration into action. We’re particularly proud that so many of the advertisers using our platform are smaller brands who are growing their businesses with us.”
