We live in an app world. It has been predicted that by 2017, 160billion apps will have been downloaded. We're using them for fun, for our social lives and we're also using them for our business lives.

With apps taking centre stage in our digital lives, we at Moneypenny, wanted to give you our favourites apps:

Feedly – This is effectively a simple-to-use RSS reader. You can flick through different news articles and blog posts and save any that you think are worth reading later. This means we can email any interesting articles through to team members and departments quickly and easily. It’s ideal for sharing the latest innovations and technology updates.

Evernote - The best bit about Evernote is its cloud storage; it syncs everything together, which means we can be working on laptops, iPads or desktop and still have access to anything we’ve saved to Evernote. You can leave yourself memos, upload images and take screenshots. This is particularly good in meetings when notes and diagrams have been written on a whiteboard; all we have to do is take a picture within Evernote and it’s saved. You can even find the image later via Evernote’s search function, as it picks up text in images.

Dropbox - There are so many image files emailed around the office on a daily basis; for example, when we’re working on a new webpage template or designing a new stand for an exhibition. Most visual files are too large to send via email so we use Dropbox. Their app is extremely handy; when one of us is not in the office they can still view files easily, resulting in quicker sign-off on projects and designs.

Pocket – A great app for when you find yourself without WI-FI; it lets you save articles, and read them later, even if you don’t have an internet connection. You can save things to the Pocket app from Feedly or Twitter (a large number of apps are integrated with Pocket). If one of us sees something when we’re in a web browser and want to save it to Pocket, we simply email it to add@getpocket.com However, it is worth noting that the app doesn’t allow you to email more than one article at a time.

Wunderlist - This is an app we are just testing at the moment. It was recommended to us by a friend who owns her own business: she uses it to keep track of everything that needs doing on a daily basis. Almost like a ‘to-do’ list, Wunderlist also gives you the option to allocate people from your contacts to certain tasks, as well as being able to email out from the app. Time will tell if it’s right for us, but test mode certainly seems promising.

Skype – The Skype app is perfect for conference calls on the move or with people abroad. This proved particularly useful for keeping in touch with our team in New Zealand; experienced Moneypenny Receptionists on secondment who look after overnight UK calls. When this expansion in our operations was picked up by the media, Skype became an invaluable tool for giving interviews to TV companies on the other side of the world. It was all a bit hectic with calls taking place in the early hours of the morning UK time, but without doubt it proved to be hugely rewarding and an entirely worthwhile exercise.
