As in any business, social media is becoming an increasingly important engagement tool for the sports industry, especially in football. And especially in the Premier League.
Teams are taking to social media to engage with their supporters in ways they've never been able to before. Supporters have been using social media to air their thoughts on their team for much longer.
And there is never more social traffic than during a time of huge success, or in this case, turmoil.
So just what happens Twitter when Manchester United lose their first three games of the year since 1932?
- There have been almost 5.5million tweets in the past month with opinions divided on David Moyes, discussions about matches, the penalty awarded against United in their CapitalOne Cup defeat to Sunderland, the FA Cup defeat to Swansea City and fans' hopes of new signings in the January transfer window.
- 56% of those tweets are fans' airing general opinions on things like:
- 7% tweeted support for Moyes.
- 15% said they do not support Moyes.
- 22% had their say on the penalty decision at Sunderland, and general refereeing.
- 3% asked for new signings.
- 8% talked about former boss, Sir Alex Ferguson.
- 2% talked about Wayne Rooney (Performance and speculation
- The remaining 42% of tweets focused purely on the three defeats.
- 5% talked about the CapitalOne Cup defeat to Sunderland.
- 9% talked about the FA Cup defeat to Swansea City.
- 21% talked about the Premier League defeat to Tottenham on New Year's Day.
- The final 8% consisted of opposing fans gloating.
So there you have it. Now you know what happens to Twitter when Manchester United lose the first three games of the year for the first time since 1932.
