At Facebook’s annual developer conference, F8 Mark Zuckerberg stood in front of a large screen in front of 5,000 developers and entrepreneurs’ that said “The Future is Private”

Forgive me for being sceptical but do we really believe that Facebook is going to lead the privacy revolution any more than we believe Donald Trump is going to save the planet?

Obviously, Zuckerberg wants to become “more trustworthy” just as the ‘Donald’ wants to appear intelligent but it takes more than hollow words and a big stage.

We now know that Cambridge Analytica had harvested the personal information of millions of Facebook users to build voter profiles for the Trump presidential campaign. We all know that, but neither Facebook or Zuckerberg still haven’t acknowledged their part in this betrayal of trust and indeed democracy.

“We don’t exactly have the strongest reputation on privacy,” said a grinning Zuck, much the same as the grinning President issuing his Earth Day message without even mentioning climate change!

Last week Facebook admitted for the first time that it expects to face a record fine of up to $5 billion from the Federal Trade Commission for violating its users’ privacy but is this just a drop in the ocean baring in mind that their share price jumped despite all of the controversies?
